MMP FESTIVAL, VIENENBURG,GERMANY 1 August 2009
The event took place in glorious weather with around 65 Pacific Islanders & families attending, coming
from as far away as Denmark, Finland, Sweden, Switzerland, England and various parts of Germany. The campsite was open from
28 July and many took the opportunity to arrive a few days before the Festival to enjoy the lovely countryside around the
town of Vienenburg close by the Harz Mountains.
The site was soon filled with laughter and joyful greetings as friends and newcomers alike were greeted
in Pacific style while children enjoyed the freedom of the open spaces in the campsite. Tents were quickly erected and the
large kitchen marquee became a focal point for impromptu gatherings with the mobile bar receiving its fair share of visitors!
The day of the Festival was warm and sunny and, thanks to lots of hard work by so many, everything was in
place for the start of the main event. The Event was officially opened by a Representative of the Vienenburg Town Council
followed by a Blessing from the local Priest. Demonstrations of Lei making, Hula & Tamure Dance were next on the agenda.
The Feast with the Umu as a highlight followed and was thoroughly enjoyed by all, not least the Vienenburg public whom for
many, this was the first experience of a Pacific Island style festival.
Dancing, singing and, finally, a fire dance kept everyone enthralled until well after dark. The festival
concluded with an Island Night disco.
A selection of photographs follows and our thanks are due to Members who have made these available for us
all to enjoy so soon after the event.
P.S. There is a rumour that Frank will be giving German lessons for those interested in newspapers!
